Hello, readers!
It's been a minute since I've posted here. Here's a little recap of this blog's history:
- June 9, 2020 – I started this blog to talk about the USA Today crossword, of which I am a huge fan.
- March 11, 2024 – USA Today picked up the blog and I began writing an article called "Off the Grid," which was essentially this blog, but published on the USA Today website.
- August 1, 2025 – Beginning August 1, I will resume blogging about the USA Today crossword on this site.
USA Today informed me last month that, effective the end of July, they were going to "pause" (their word) "Off the Grid." There is no definite plan for how long this pause will be, but at least through the end of the year.
As you can imagine, I am extremely disappointed by this news. Since it began, writing this blog has brought me great joy. And while the work is the same whether I am posting it here or writing for USA Today, there was a (rather significant) difference in pay. And, of course, it's always nice to be compensated for one's effort. I have enjoyed my time writing "Off the Grid." It has seemed a bit surreal, but also lovely to be paid consistently for the same writing I was previously doing on this site. It was also great to reach a broader audience. Naturally I am saddened to have that end (whether it ends up being temporary or permanent).
Honestly, when USA Today told me of their decision, I was tempted to just take it as a sign and stop. I've been writing about the USA Today crossword for over five years now; that seems like a pretty good run.
However, as I mulled it over I remembered how much I love writing this blog. I love writing about the crossword every day. Additionally, I appreciate being able to highlight the time and effort the constructor's put into making these puzzles. Ultimately, I decided that when I do stop writing this blog – which, of course, I will one day – I want it to be my decision.
And so, here we are: Sally's Take is back. I plan to continue writing about the USA Today crossword every day. I recommend you bookmark this page to make it easy to find. If you've followed me from here to "Off the Grid" and back, thank you! If you discovered my writing through "Off the Grid" and are now reading this, thank you!
For readers, there are some advantages to Sally's Take. First of all, there are no ads. Secondly, you can leave comments (though I ask that you be kind and respectful if you choose to do so). Additionally, I've been told by constructors that Sally's Take is easier to search as a database.
Thanks for coming along for the ride. I am grateful for all who take the time to read my musings.
–Sally (and Willow)
P.S. You'll notice I have reactivated the "Donate" button on the blog's homepage. Support of my work with an occasional donation is always optional (truly!) and always appreciated (definitely!).
I’m sorry that USA Today made this decision. I really enjoy reading your commentary. I will now follow you here. Thanks for doing this - I always learn something!
ReplyDeleteThanks for reading, Kristi!
DeleteWhew! So glad you're staying with us. Doing a crossword puzzle is fun. Doing a puzzle with Sally is illuminating!
ReplyDeleteThis description made me smile! Thanks for doing puzzles with me.
DeleteThe MA pair are glad you are keeping it up. We look forward to following your musings.
ReplyDeleteThank you, MA pair! I appreciate your continued support.
DeleteHi Sally, this is your friend Steve (from the Elaine Stritch email a while back). Sorry to hear of USA Today's decision to "pause" your Off the Grid blog. I suspected as much, because the link from the puzzle to your blog has been missing the last couple days. I have bookmarked this page, and will definitely visit it daily, after doing the puzzle. I always enjoy your comments, especially about Willow. Thank you for deciding to keep writing. Hope you get lots of donations to support your effort. Sincerely, Steve
ReplyDeleteWillow and I both thank you for reading, Steve :)
DeleteDo you take checks?
ReplyDeleteGood question! Yes, of course. You can find my address on the Contact Sally tab. (You might need to go back to the home page too access that tab)
DeleteSo glad you’re continuing to publish your commentaries about the USA Today crosswords. I read your “musings” (as you call them!) every day and always learn something!
ReplyDeleteThank you for reading!
DeleteI'm so sorry to hear you've been "paused." It's a shame, overall, that newspapers are disappearing.
ReplyDeleteI've got your blog icon next to the crossword icon. I'll check it... especially for those times when the theme makes no sense to me, e.g., "An anagram of every letter in the alphabet." I do the crossword every day and it makes me realize I know nothing about current culture: actors, sports teams' names and locations, rappers (do people who do crosswords know rappers?), authors (and I'm a reader), international cuisine... the list goes on.
Thank you for providing this service. You're always so upbeat when I sometimes want to punch my computer screen: Really... did anyone know "Satyajit Ray Protagonist?"
Thank you for the kind words, Kathy, and thank you for reading! I learn a lot from crosswords, as my blog is evidence of! That's one of the reasons I enjoy crosswords, though I definitely understand the frustration when the things I don't know seem to pile up in one puzzle!
