Things I learned:
  • AFRO (1A: Hairstyle for Coffy) Coffy is the title character of a 1973 movie about a female vigilante seeking revenge for her sister's heroin addiction. Pam Grier plays the role of Nurse Flower Child "Coffy" Coffin.
  • CAR (52A: "___ Wash" (Rose Royce song) "CAR Wash," by the soul and R&B band, Rose Royce, was the theme song of a 1976 movie of the same name. "CAR Wash" was a notable hit of the disco era.
  • SEAFOOD (21D: What a marisqueria serves) "Marisqueria" is a Spanish term for a SEAFOOD restaurant.
Random thoughts and interesting things:
  • HOT HOT HOT (16A: 1982 hit song by Arrow) "HOT HOT HOT" was the biggest hit song for calypso and soca artist, Arrow.
  • AGILE (18A: Like parkour athletes) Parkour is a type of movement and a training discipline in which practitioners attempt to get from point A to point B in the most fluid way possible. Usually carried out in urban spaces, parkour involves navigating over, under, and across various obstacles. As you can see in this video, parkour athletes are indeed AGILE!
  • TECH (56A: Timnit Gebru's field) Timnit Gebru is a computer scientist who advocates for diversity in technology. Her research focuses on algorithmic bias and data mining. With Rediet Abebe, she co-founded Black in AI (artificial intelligence), an organization working to increase the "presence and inclusion of Black people in the field of AI" and TECH.
  • ACHED (53D: Was sore) This is certainly not the first time we've seen ACHED in a puzzle, but it struck a chord with me today. Earlier this week, my family and I hiked to the bottom of the
Grand Canyon - and more importantly back up! - over the course of three days. It was an absolutely incredible experience. I could write several thousand words about it, but for now, I will simply share one photo and say that afterward we definitely ACHED all over!
  • TESS (56D: "Body Double" author Gerritsen) TESS Gerritsen is an author and a retired physician. Her medical thrillers with the central characters of homicide detective Jane Rizzoli and medical examiner Dr. Maura Isles inspired the TV series Rizzoli & Isles. Body Double is the fourth book in the Rizzoli & Isles series.
  • HAN (61D: World's largest ethnic group) Making up about 18% of the global population, the HAN is an East Asian ethnic group native to China.

    Geography review:

    • CHAD (5A: Country east of Niger) CHAD is a landlocked country in Africa. In addition to Niger, its neighbors are Libya, Sudan, the Central African Republic, Cameroon, and Nigeria. The capital of CHAD is N'Djamena.
    • TEL (22A: ___ Aviv) TEL Aviv, Israel is located on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea.
    • NOLA (30A: Treme's city, for short) Tremé is a historic neighborhood in New Orleans, Louisiana (NOLA). I learned about Tremé from the September 8, 2021 puzzle
    • AMISH (51D: Over 40% of people in Holmes County, Ohio) Holmes County, Ohio has the highest concentration of AMISH in the world. The largest AMISH community is located in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.
HIP HIP HOORAY for this fun puzzle! I really liked the answers OVER HERE, EXIT ONLY, and DO TELL. My favorite entry might be IT'S MAGIC. It's nice to be back to my blogging routine. HAT TIP to my amazing guest bloggers that filled in for this break (the longest one I've taken since I began blogging): Mollie, Matthew, Sid, Shannon, Enrique, and Brooke! I knew the blog was in great hands, and never worried about it even once. (I was much more concerned with putting one foot in front of the other!) This puzzle was a great one to come back to, and a wonderful way to begin my Friday.
