Jay: The idea for this puzzle came to me awhile back, and it just seemed like a simple, elegant, easy puzzle idea.  As I've said here before: I'm a lifelong fan of the New York Mets ... and so consider me especially pleased to have squeezed SHEA STADIUM into the puzzle.  I still dream about it and miss it every day.  It's not like we Mets fans have anything positive or uplifting to look forward to.

Alas - hope solvers had fun with this puzzle and that you enjoyed solving it as much as I enjoyed creating it.

Random thoughts and interesting things:

• TOMATO (7A: Ingredient in a Caprese salad) The ingredients of a Caprese salad are mozzarella cheese, TOMATOes, and basil. The salad is often seasoned with salt and olive oil or balsamic vinegar.
• NIECES (15A: Some niblings) Nibling is a non-gender specific term which can be used to refer to the children of one's siblings – one's NIECES and nephews.
• STAT (18A: Bit of data on the back of a baseball card) I appreciate that STAT is clued in reference to baseball, as it crosses the theme answer SHEA STADIUM.
• ACTOR (28A: Washington or Ford, e.g.) This is a fun example of a non-question mark clue that is a misdirect. I knew the answer wasn't the obvious one of "president," because that didn't fit. Is it "state" – no Ford isn't a state. Is it a car "model" – no Washington doesn't fit. It took me a bit of time and the help of a few crossing answers to arrive at ACTOR. That's Denzel Washington and Harrison Ford, of course.
• PONY (30A: "Pink ___ Club" (Chappell Roan song)) "Pink PONY Club" is a song on Chappell Roan's 2023 album, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess. Thanks for the earworm, puzzle! "Pink PONY Club, I'm gonna keep on dancing at the / Pink PONY Club, I'm gonna keep on dancing down in / West Hollywood, I'm gonna keep on dancing at the / Pink PONY Club, Pink PONY Club."
• URANUS (33A: Seventh planet from the sun) Well, I knew the answer wasn't Earth, as we are the "third rock from the sun." There is a mnemonic that is helpful for remembering the names of the planets in order, "My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Noodles." The word "Us" is the seventh word in this sentence, and represents the planet URANUS. The planet URANUS is one of two planets in the Solar System classified as an ice giant. (The other ice giant is Neptune. Jupiter and Saturn are classified as gas giants.) URANUS is composed primarily of water, ammonia, and methane.
• ADA (35A: Computing pioneer Lovelace) It's always nice to see a reference to ADA Lovelace in the puzzle.
• LEO (41A: Footballer Messi, to fans) Lionel Messi, whose nickname is LEO, is a professional footballer (or soccer player). He plays for Argentina's national team and, since 2023, also plays for Inter Miami.
• TEE (44A: Aid for a driver?) A TEE isn't an aid for a driver of a vehicle, but it is an aid for a golfer who is using a driver (a type of golf club).
• ACE (53A: Serve well-done?) An ACE is a tennis serve that is done so well the opponent can't return it.
• AIR (54A: 2023 film about Nike sneakers) The movie AIR, released in 2023, is based on true events about the Nike sneaker line AIR Jordan. Michael Jordan was not directly involved with the making of AIR, but he did consult with director Ben Affleck.
• ON BASE (64A: Like one with a hit single?) I enjoyed the misdirect of this question mark clue. The clue is not referring to a singer with a hit single, but rather to a baseball player who has hit a single and is now ON BASE. 
• SHEA STADIUM (3D: Home of the New York Mets from 1964 to 2008) SHEA STADIUM was located in Queens, New York City and was the home of MLB's New York Mets from 1964 to 2008. The New York Jets football team also played in SHEA STADIUM from 1964 to 1983. SHEA STADIUM was demolished in 2009 after the opening of Citi Field, which is the Mets current home. (Sorry about the Mets current season, Jay. My team, the St. Louis Cardinals, is not faring much better this year!)
• COCOA BEACH (16D: City on Florida's Space Coast) COCOA BEACH, Florida is located on the central eastern coast of the state. NASA's John F. Kennedy Space Center is located approximately 15 miles north of COCOA BEACH.
• PEYOTE (27D: Psychoactive desert plant) PEYOTE is a small, spineless cactus native to southern North America. PEYOTE contains psychoactive alkaloids, particularly mescaline. Indigenous peoples of North America have used PEYOTE for many years for ceremonial purposes. 
• AURORA (28D: City name in Illinois and Colorado) AURORA, Illinois is a suburb of Chicago. AURORA, Colorado is a suburb of Denver.
• SONS (57D: "___ and Lovers" (D.H. Lawrence novel)) SONS and Lovers is a 1913 novel by D.H. Lawrence. The book (which is considered autobiographical) tells the story of Paul Morel, exploring his relationship with his demanding mother and with two different lovers. SONS and Lovers was ranked number nine on the Modern Library's 1999 list of 100 Best Novels.
• ABC (61D: "Press Your Luck" network) Press Your Luck is a game show that originally aired from 1983-1986. A revival of the game show has aired on ABC since 2019, with Elizabeth Banks as the host. Contestants answer questions to earn spins on the "big board." The board contains 18 spaces that correspond to cash, prizes, or a cartoon mascot known as the Whammy.
• SIR (63D: Title turned down by Stephen Hawking) Stephen Hawking (1942-2018) was an English astrophysicist, cosmologist, author, and professor. In the late 1990s, Stephen Hawking declined a knighthood due to his dislike of titles and as a protest against the United Kingdom's science funding policy.

The word UP in the title alerted me to look in the vertical answers for today's theme. This puzzle is a great example of theme answers that undergo transformation. That is, the words in the theme answers that are then paired with BUTTER have different meanings in each phrase. For example, in SHEA STADIUM and SHEA BUTTER, the word SHEA means different things. This transformation isn't crucial for a theme to work, but it is an extra nice touch and extra satisfying when it's achieved. Thank you, Jay, for this splendid puzzle.
