Title: TLC

Constructor: Matthew Luter

Editor: Amanda Rafkin

Theme synopsis:
  • TIME-LAPSE CAMERA (17A: Photography gear that can show a flower growing in seconds)
  • TRES LECHES CAKE (36A: Dessert that's soaked in a trio of dairy products)
  • THREE-LEAF CLOVER (54A: Shamrock)
TLC: Each theme answer has the initials TLC: TIME-LAPSE CAMERA, TRES LECHES CAKE, and THREE-LEAF CLOVER.

And now a word from our constructor:
Matthew: Here’s another one for the “listen for interesting phrases, and there may be a puzzle there” file. I heard a reference to TRES LECHES CAKE a while back, and the initials TLC registered with me right away. I wondered how many good in-the-language stand-alone phrases with that set of initials I could find that would fit in a 15x grid… and here we are. Other alternatives we considered: THIS LANE CLOSED and THE LOW COUNTRIES. (A larger grid could have allowed for TOYOTA LAND CRUISER or TASTES LIKE CHICKEN!) I guess we can say that in the end, this puzzle was made with TENDER LOVING CARE. Hope you enjoy the solve!

What I learned from today's puzzle:
  • WOMEN (3D: "20th Century ___" (Mike Mills film)) 20th Century WOMEN is a 2016 movie starring Annette Bening, Elle Fanning, Greta Gerwig, Lucas Jade Zumann, and Billy Crudup. It was written and directed by Mike Mills and is partly inspired by his childhood. The movie is a coming-of-age story about a 15-year-old who lives with his single mother and their two tenants.
  • RETRO (33D: Like chiptune music) Chiptune is a style of electronic music made using the programmable sound generator chips or synthesizers in arcade machines, computers, and video game consoles. Chiptune music was popular in the 1980s, making it now RETRO. Here's a link to an example of chiptune music called "The Adventure Lights."
  • SEVEN (48D: "___ Nation Army") "SEVEN Nation Army" is a 2003 song by the White Stripes. It was the lead single from their album, Elephant. The song won a Grammy Award for Best Rock Song.
Random thoughts and interesting things:
  • TIME-LAPSE CAMERA (17A: Photography gear that can show a flower growing in seconds) TIME-LAPSE CAMERAs are cool, and I just spent way too much time watching TIME-LAPSE photography videos! Here's a nice one of a cockscomb flower growing.
  • INSTA (23A: App with Reels, for short) INSTA is making back-to-back puzzle appearances. We saw it yesterday clued as [Story-sharing app, for short].
  • BERKELEY (25A: Bay Area university city) BERKELEY, California, located on the eastern shore of San Francisco Bay, is home to the University of California, BERKELEY, also known as Cal. The school was founded in 1868 and was California's first land-grant university and the first campus in the University of California system.
  • TRES LECHES CAKE (36A: Dessert that's soaked in a trio of dairy products) "TRES LECHES" translates to "three milks." Appropriately then, TRES LECHES CAKE is a sponge CAKE soaked in evaporated milk, condensed milk, and heavy cream.
  • ACTS (39A: There are two in "Company") Company is a musical –with two ACTS – written by Stephen Sondheim. Company, which debuted on Broadway in 1970, deals with the topics of dating, marriage, divorce, and friendship through a series of vignettes that focus on the celebration of the main character,
Playbill for Company in Times Square
    Robert's, 35th birthday.
  • GOD (44A: "Let there be light" speaker) In the Biblical story of creation, GOD says, "Let there be light" (and there was light!). Since then, a number of people – myself included – have said, "Let there be light," when flipping on a light switch.

  • EVA (52A: Actress Longoria) As I've previously written, I know EVA Longoria best from her guest star role on the fourth season of Only Murders in the Building
  • BUNDT (59A: ___ pan (circular baking tool with a hole)) A BUNDT pan results in a cake with a characteristic donut shape and a hole in the center. A BUNDT cake is not linked to a specific recipe, but is used to refer to any cake baked in such a pan. BUNDT is a trademark of Nordic Ware, a cookware company co-founded in Minnesota by the Dalquist brothers.
  • ROSA (60A: Civil rights icon Parks) I have written about ROSA Parks previously. Always happy to see her get a mention in the puzzle.
  • ALIBI (2D: "I was at a crossword tournament when it happened!," e.g.) Ha! This is a fantastic ALIBI, in my opinion. I'm really enjoying the creative ALIBI clues recently. You may recall that a couple of weeks ago we saw ALIBI clued as ["I was watching 'Jeopardy!' when it happened," for one]. Speaking of crossword tournaments, I encourage you to check out the details for crossword tournaments happening in the next few months: Boswords on July 26 (in Boston and online), Lollapuzzoola on August 15 (in New York City), and the Midwest Crossword Tournament on October 3 (in Chicago and online). You never know, your participation may come in handy as an ALIBI.
  • SPARKS (9D: L.A.'s WNBA team) The Los Angeles SPARKS have been part of the WNBA since its inaugural 1997 season. The SPARKS have been WNBA champions three times – in 2001, 2002, and 2016.
  • TEMPE (10D: Sun Devils' city) The Sun Devils are the athletic teams at Arizona State University, which is located in TEMPE, Arizona. Sparky the Sun Devil is the school's mascot.
  • LETHAL (18D: "___ Weapon" (action movie franchise)) The LETHAL Weapon franchise began with the 1987 movie for which it is named. LETHAL Weapon focuses on two Los Angeles Police Department detectives, portrayed by Danny Glover and Mel Gibson.
  • ENAMEL (37D: Hardest substance in the human body) ENAMEL is the hard, mineralized substance that covers the crown (the visible part) of teeth in humans and some animals. As the clue informs us, ENAMEL is the hardest substance in the human body.
  • HUM (55D: Use a kazoo, say) This clue makes me want to find a kazoo and HUM some tunes.
  • Other clues and answers I especially enjoyed:
    • ARIA (32A: Solo that ends on a high note?)
    • IT IS (34A: "___ what ___...")
    • SLOP (63A: Low-quality AI-generated material)
I guessed right away from the title that this puzzle would be an initialism theme. (Granted, it may have helped that we saw an initialism theme yesterday, so it was on my mind...) I enjoyed these TLC finds. Thank you, Matt, for this excellent puzzle.
