Title: "THE DOOR'S ALWAYS OPEN!" (Freestyle)

Constructor: Adrian Johnson

Editor: Amanda Rafkin

Theme synopsis:
"THE DOOR'S ALWAYS OPEN!" (Freestyle): There's no theme today, as this is a freestyle, or themeless, puzzle. The title is a nod to PLEASE COME VISIT (50A: "It would be lovely to host you").

What I learned from today's puzzle:
  • PEA (17A: Green pastizzi veggie) Pastizzi are pastries that originate from the island country of Malta. Flaky pastry is filled with either a ricotta filling or curried PEAs. Pastizzi are folded in different ways, either down the middle or down the side, as a ways of identifying the filling.
  • ALI (10D: Soccer star Daei who is the third-best international goal scorer) ALI Daei is a former professional footballer (known as a soccer player in the U.S.). From 2000 to 2006, he was captain of the Iranian national football team. He is known for being a prolific scorer. Add ALI Daei to the sports knowledge I have gained from solving crosswords. ALI is making back-to-back puzzle appearances. We saw it yesterday clued as ["Tuca & Bertie" voice actress Wong].
Random thoughts and interesting things:
  • NAT (21A: Rebellion leader Turner) In 1831, NAT Turner led a rebellion of enslaved persons in Virginia. The rebellion resulted in the death of over 55 people, and NAT Turner lived in hiding for two months afterwards. In the aftermath of NAT Turner's rebellion, many Black people were killed and harsh(er) laws were enacted against enslaved people.
  • SIDE BAR (23A: "I'm going to digress real quick...") I tried to put "SIDE note" here at first (a phrase I use often!), but obviously that didn't fit. Crossing answers helped me see the equally valid SIDE BAR.
  • NI HAO (28A: Greeting that literally translates to "You good?") NI HAO is an informal Chinese greeting.
  • STAGES (36A: Segments of the Tour de France) The Tour de France is a multiple STAGE road cycling race held annually. As you might guess from the name of the race, it is held mainly in France. While the exact route of the Tour de France changes each year, it always finishes on the Champs-Élysées in Paris.
  • BANCHAN (38A: Small plates such as bibim mandu) In Korean cuisine, BANCHAN refers to a variety of side dishes served alongside rice. Bibim mandu, also known as Korean potsticker salad, is a dish of fried dumplings and crunchy cabbage and vegetables. We have seen the word BANCHAN used in clues before, but this is the first time it's been an answer.
  • HIP (41A: Joint stretched in pigeon pose) Pigeon pose is a HIP-opening asana in yoga as exercise.
  • OMAHA (46A: Nebraska's largest city) OMAHA, with a population of just under 500,000, is Nebraska's largest city. For a little perspective, it would take over 16 cities the size of OMAHA to equal the population of New York City.
  • CANE (2D: Kingpin's staff?) Kingpin is a Marvel Comics supervillain. He has been an adversary of Spider-Man and Daredevil. While Kingpin, as his businessman and philanthropist alter ego Wilson Fisk, does have a staff of business associates and lawyers, the question mark in this clue means the "staff" here is the CANE he carries. The CANE is equipped to shoot lasers and emit sleeping gas.
  • MOMO (6D: Dumplings often served with achar) Many cuisines have some type of dumpling, dough wrapped around a filling and then cooked. A MOMO is a type of steamed dumpling in Tibetan and Nepali cuisine. Achar, which may be served with MOMO, is a spiced condiment of pickled vegetables.
  • SANS (8D: Comic ___ (controversial font)) Comic SANS was originally created for use in informal documents and children's materials. It has inspired many strong feelings. Many people like it. Many people do not. There's even a group called Ban Comic SANS. Comic SANS has been shown to be a helpful font for students with dyslexia, partly because of wider spacing between letters as compared to other fonts.
  • ERNIE (12D: "Rubber Duckie" Muppet) I'm always happy for a Muppet reference, and one about ERNIE and his rubber duckie is especially nice. "Rubber duckie you're the one / you make bath time lots of fun...voh voh di oh..."
  • SAD BEIGE (14D: Muted, minimally stimulating color palette) Ha! The term SAD BEIGE was coined in 2022 by social media influencer Hayley DeRoche. She describes the aesthetic this way, "SAD BEIGE is anything neutral-toned that has had joy siphoned out of it."
  • NOUN (28D: Rock, paper or scissors) As I've previously written, as a constructor it's fun to clue a word such as NOUN because of all the wonderful possibilities. Choosing three NOUNs whose names together form a popular game is a clever choice.
  • SOAP (32D: Dr. Bronner's product) Dr. Bronner's Magic SOAPs is a company founded in the 1940s by Emanuel Bronner. The company sells organic SOAP and personal care products. A characteristic of Dr. Bronner's products is text-heavy labels (that often include political messages) and a variety of advertised uses for each product.
  • ADD (37D: Do sum math?) This is a nice question mark clue with the word "sum" – a homophone of "some" – providing a clue that the answer is ADD.
  • CHEATER (39D: Unwelcome person at game night) My first thought here was bad sport, but a CHEATER is equally unwelcome at game night.
  • TESLA (45D: Engineer Nikola) I have previously written about Nikola TESLA
  • ETS (49D: "Arrival" creatures) The 2016 sci-fi movie, Arrival, stars Amy Adams as a linguist enlisted by the U.S. Army to discover how to communicate with ETS that have arrived on Earth. The movie is based on Ted Chiang's novella, "Story of Your Life."
  • EIDI (51D: Some holiday money) EIDI is a gift of money given as part of the celebration of the Muslim holidays Eid-al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha.
This is a striking grid. The top stack of long answers is particularly nice: SCALP MASSAGE, TATTOO PARLORS, and ONE-DIMENSIONAL. Thank you, Adrian, for this interesting puzzle.
