Title: DEAD ENDS

Constructor: Ron Ammirante

Editor: Amie Walker

Theme synopsis:
  • A FLASH IN THE PAN (20A: Success unlikely to be repeated)
  • LIGHTNING BOLT (36A: It's striking!)
  • PRODUCTION LINE (52A: Industrial workflow path in many factories)
DEAD ENDS: The END word of each theme answer can be paired with the word DEAD to form a new word: DEADPAN, DEADBOLT, and DEADLINE.

What I learned from today's puzzle:
  • SWEDE (46A: Golfer Maja Stark, for one) Swedish golfer Maja Stark won the 2025 U.S. Women's Open, her first major LPGA title. Add Maja Stark (and her nationality) to the sports knowledge I have gained from solving crosswords.
Random thoughts and interesting things:
  • ITEM (10A: "Unexpected ___ in bagging area") If you have ever used the self checkout option at a store, you may have heard the words, "unexpected ITEM in bagging area." This phrase has been used in a variety of memes, cartoons, and video clips.
  • OAHU (34A: Island where the King Kamehameha Celebration Floral Parade takes place) King Kamehameha the Great was the monarch who established the unified Kingdom of Hawai'i in 1795. King Kamehameha Day is a public holiday in Hawaii, celebrated on June 11. Celebrations include a hula competition and floral parades. Several of the Hawaiian islands have floral parades on King Kamehameha Day. The floral parade on OAHU begins at the 'Iolani Palace in downtown Honolulu.
  • LIGHTNING BOLT (36A: It's striking!) An exclamation point in a clue alerts solvers to take the clue literally. In this case, the clue is referencing a LIGHTNING BOLT strike.
  • TBT (40A: Hashtag for some old pics) TBT = throwback Thursday
  • ALI (48A: Comedian Wong)  ALI Wong is a stand-up comedian, actress, and writer. She co-starred with Steven Yuen in the Netflix series Beef. For that role she won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie.
  • SAM (49A: ___ Wilson aka Captain America) In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Anthony Mackie portrays SAM Wilson aka Captain America. The most recent installment in the Captain America film series was Captain America: Brave New World (2025).
  • LAOS (57A: Country between Vietnam and Thailand) LAOS is a landlocked country in Southeast Asia. In addition to Vietnam and Thailand, LAOS borders Myanmar, China, and Cambodia. The capital of LAOS is Vientiane.
  • ANIL (59A: "Mr. India" star Kapoor) Mr. India is a 1987 Hindi-language sci-fi movie. ANIL Kapoor portrays Arun Verma, a violinist and philanthropist who receives a cloaking device that provides invisibility. He uses the cloak to fight crime as the superhero Mr. India.
  • SODA (4D: "___ Pop" (hit for the fictional Saja Boys)) I learned about the song "SODA Pop" from the February 3, 2026 puzzle. The Saja Boys are a fictional boy band in the 2025 movie Kpop Demon Hunters.
  • TUNA ROLL (11D: Sushi orders that may be spicy) The spiciness in a spicy TUNA ROLL is usually a result of the addition of spicy mayo or sriracha.
  • MGS (13D: Booker T. & the ___) Booker T. & the M.G.'S were a band that played R&B, soul, funk, and instrumental rock. Booker T. & the M.G.'s were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992, and the Blues Hall of Fame in 2019.
  • TITLE ROLE (33D: Rocky in "Rocky," for example) The animated TV series The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle and Friends originally aired from 1959 to 1964. The show featured the adventures of two anthropomorphic animals – Rocket J. "Rocky" Squirrel and Bullwinkle Moose. Edited to add: Silly me! As a couple of readers have pointed out, this clue is obviously a reference to Rocky Balboa in the Rocky movies. My only defense is that my husband and I went to see a Bugs Bunny at the Symphony concert this weekend, so I apparently had cartoons on my mind.
  • LIU (57D: "Kill Bill" star Lucy) In the Kill Bill movies – Kill Bill: Volume 1 (2003) and Kill Bill: Volume 2 (2004) – Lucy LIU portrays a former member of the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad who becomes "Queen of the Tokyo Underworld."
The title of today's puzzle allowed me to make a guess about the theme, and that guess turned out to be correct. Always a thrill when that happens. Congratulations to Ron Ammirante making a USA Today crossword debut! Thank you, Ron, for this enjoyable puzzle.

  1. I thought of the Rocky played by Sylvester Stallone. Both examples, though, are “title roles.”
